In 1969, AICTE recommended that, as an experimental measure, one polytechnic from each state should be given academic freedom to frame curricula, to impart instruction and to evolve a suitable pattern of examination-oriented and make technicians directly useful on completion of their training.


Maharashtra government chose this polytechnic as an experimental polytechnic. The academic freedom has been granted in phases Diploma Course in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical being granted freedom as far back as 1969. Subsequently in 1978-79 freedom was extend to other course, namely , Industrial Electronics, Plastic Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Digital Electronics. In 1989-90 the polytechnic was granted full autonomy to conduct all examination including final year and award the Diplomas. Effective 1993-94, autonomy has been extended to past- Diploma and part Time Diploma Courses. Thus, the polytechnic is now fully autonomous for all the Diploma are awarded by the Polytechnic. This indicted that as the institute grew it gained credibility and justified the confidence accorded to it in the beginning.
